Paralleling advances in HIV care and the evolution of psychosomatic medicine (PSM) toward outpatient care, clinicians have developed several multispecialty/multidisciplinary models for management of HIV/AIDS. Despite the progress in care and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of HIV with antiretrovirals, many persons with HIV and mental illness may lack access to care. The prevalence of HIV infection in persons with serious untreated mental illness is estimated to be 10 to 20 times that of the general population. Since adherence to medical care and antiretroviral medication are crucial for survival and for prevention of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, co-located psychiatrists can improve access to care. We present four models of integrated care for persons with HIV: one each from Spain and Canada, and two from the USA. The symposium will consist of a description of each of the care models, followed by an interactive discussion.

HIV clinics are an illustrative model for other areas where embedded PSM psychiatrists may actively participate in disease-specific models for patients with complex systemic medical and psychiatric illness.
