Advances made in neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychopharmacology and psychotherapy have given empirical credence to the indivisible nature of the brain and mind. Indeed, partially segregated and overlapping cortico-cortical networks and cortical-subcortical circuits mediate functions such as socially appropriate behaviors, language, sense of direction, etc. Additionally, monoaminergic neurons whose cell bodies are located n the brain stem diffusely project their long axons to cortical and subcortical structures to influence emotional behavior. The Neuropsychiatry SIG will conduct a pre-conference neuropsychiatry course in the following four topics:
1- Overview of neuropsychiatry and basic neuroscience
2- The Neuropsychiatry of Stroke: To examine the association between emotional behavior and stroke based on the classic work of Robinson and colleagues.
3- Neurocognitive disorders: To review Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions including biomarkers and neuroimaging.
4- Neuropsychiatry of Epilepsy: Emotional, cognitive and behavioral aspects of seizure disorders will be reviewed.
5- Neuropsychiatry of Traumatic Brain Injury: This topic will discuss classic pathological and neuroimaging findings in TBI and their relationship with behavioral outcomes.
6- Geriatric Neuropsychiatry
Each topic will have two formats: Presentation of classic clinical vignette, followed by a comprehensive review of the topic.
